AF Blakemore and Son were responsible for the gate that killed Ronald Heywood and found guilty of a breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974). The company was also fined £108,625 in costs.

The gate in question failed as a result of wear and tear on a bolt that held the gate bracket in place.

Commenting on the case Gate Safe founder Richard Jackson says:

“All gates are potentially dangerous – automated or otherwise - if they are not installed correctly and adequately maintained thereafter. Gate Safe provides guidance on the signs of wear and tear to look out for and recommends always seeking out the services of a Gate Safe Aware installer who has undergone the relevant training to understand the requirements to deliver a safe and compliant automated / manual gate.”
